Making a Common Chair a Little More Interesting!

In September, we ventured to Black Mountain, NC and set up a table to showcase our paintbrushes at the Art Fusion Event. Part of our demo table included an old chair, purchased at a thrift shop, for $15. The (demo) chair sat atop our table and attendees tested Zibra brushes by painting the chair! We brought it back with spots of color, unfinished, so we decided it needed a renovation! Around our house, we call the chair the George Washington chair because the top of the chair design reminds us of the hat our first president wore. This was a fun project that didn’t require a tremendous amount of time. Creativity developed as we worked on it – check out what we ended up with! Make sure you watch the one-minute video QUICK VIEW as well and then scroll down to see the details – a Zibra Paintbrush GIVEAWAY awaits your entry!

The Process . . .

We stripped only the portion of the chair that we wanted to stain. We tried out Goof Off Pro Stripper spray. It sprays out pretty thick and with pressure so if you decide to use this product make sure you have good protection all around the furniture piece and as always wear a filtration mask and eye protection. That goes without saying but is extremely important! The Goof Off worked pretty well on the chair since it has spindle legs but is not highly targeted in nature. We used it outside with plenty of ground cover.

Using pliable sandpaper, steel wool and cloth, we were able to get most of the stain and coatings off.

We finished getting any remaining stain off with the Ryobi Detail Sander. This tool is great for getting in those areas that a pad sander will not fit.

A nice surprise developed when we were sanding the chair back! Great shapes formed so we decided to stain those and paint the rest. This added a nice unique look and it was a (simple) process!

We have been testing a new brush and are liking the results! It’s the Zibra Half-round brush and it works great in smaller areas requiring control. We used it to paint around the stained areas on the chair back.

It didn’t take long to get two coats of chalk paint on the spindle legs and back with the Zibra Round Brush.

We finished off the project with a couple of coats of Minwax Polycrylic Clear Matte finish.

HERE IS THE FINAL REVEAL!

I thought paint was the most forgiving of my limited skills, but as I learn sanding, I love wood and any new color of stain, anything but the shades of orange I find under paint. This chair calls to me, Living wood and dignified paint.

    Hi!
    I love this chair renovation!
The wood is rich & gorgeous and the paint color & design takes it up to a new level!!
Glad to connect on IG & look forward to seeing more.
The brushes look unique and well suited for stain & paint alike on all types of WoodArt projects. I wonder how they would work for Acrylic Paintings as well.
    Blessings on your business.
    Susie 🙂
