A Very Worn and Abused Piece Turns Into a Vintage Keeper!

Walking through an indoor flea market, we noticed this writing desk and its unappealing condition. Thick lacquer and multiple scratches, requiring stripping, sanding, restaining and painting – would it be worth all the effort? We said yes!

The fun begins!

Watch the one minute video and then scroll down to see the additional photos of the process and the transformation! Check out the Paintbrush GIVEAWAY at the bottom as well.

The Process . . .

We removed all the hardware.

Mask, goggles and gloves, the stripping process began!

Although the sanding process is tedious, it exciting to uncover the beautiful wood!

Sanding with 80 grit then switching to 220 grit for a final smooth finish.

Taking it back to its natural state!

We used the Zibra Triangle Brush for all the staining and painting. The Triangle provides clean lines and holds the stain and paint with great release and control giving us the smoothest finish possible.

We lightly wiped excess stain with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Now for the paint! Using the Zibra Triangle on this piece made the job so much easier and a lot of fun!

We decided to tape the areas where the stain meets the paint. It is imperative that once you put the tape down you go back with the backside of your fingernail or a small putty knife and press the tape down firmly to keep paint from seeping up under the tape. We also recommend that you use an X-acto knife to create a defined separation between paint and tape before you pull up the tape.

We wanted to keep a natural look combining the wood stain along with the paint. We did use Chalk-Tique’s Paste Wax on both the paint and stain. It went on easily and left a nice smooth finish.

Here is the final reveal!

We went with larger more ornate hardware that matched the paint color.

Minwax English Chestnut; Valspar Mocha Syrup

We used the Zibra Triangle brush on the entire project from staining to painting!
