Bringing New Life!

It’s funny how a piece of furniture can make its way around the home from room to garage back to room! We purchased this changing table/dresser back in 2005 for our oldest daughter when she was born. It worked and looked great for a number of years, although, getting a few scratches here and there. We were never really crazy about having plexiglass on the drawers. It looked nice in an ideal world but when you are in the midst of raising little ones neatness isn’t always priority one. We don’t remember exactly how the dresser ended up in the garage as my tool workbench but nonetheless there it sat as many often commented that it was an awfully nice dresser to have in the garage. We had in the back of our minds that one day we would refinish it. The time arrived. Our youngest daughter needed a new dresser. We decided to get a little creative. This piece was pretty dusty and dirty having lived in the garage for a number of years. We wiped it down thoroughly, then began sanding the top with the intention of staining the top. However, we realized that the top was merely a thin wood veneer over pressboard. Change of plans! We decided to paint the top pink with white trim and the base pink.

The Palm Pro worked great painting flat surfaces as well as tight spaces.

Painting the trim with the Square Brush made for a quick job considering we painted three coats paint and two coats of the Matte Polycrylic.

We were looking to create a simple, clean look for the drawers. We began by painting the plexiglass with a white primer.

After picking a font that worked with the overall “look and feel” we were trying to create, we simply used iron-on transfer paper to label each drawer. A white gauze fabric was chosen as the backing.

Once the font was transferred to the fabric, we positioned it over the drawer shape and cut it out.

After the Mod Podge was fully dry, we touched up the fronts with a light layering of the white primer to soften and blend the overall look.

We were pleased with the results and we had a good time trying something unique and different.

The labeled drawers not only look nice but are a huge help in keeping the dresser organized.
